This course will enable attendees to have a better understanding of the diagnosis of head and neck cancer including prevalence, pathology, and current treatment, including surgical intervention, radiation and chemotherapy. The course will focus on implications of head and neck cancer treatment including head and neck cancer related lymphedema. In addition, attendees will gain insight into cancer care pathways and survivorship issues as they relate to head and neck cancer related lymphedema. Included is an overview of lymphedema treatment and demonstration of an advanced pneumatic compression device used in the home to effectively manage head and neck cancer related lymphedema.

Course Objectives

1. Explain how HNC and its treatments affect the anatomy and physiology of soft tissue, lymphatics, and function for patients

2. Describe early identification of patients with HNCRL based on updated National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines

3. Describe how to identify internal and external HNCRL and the impact it has on the patient's function

4. Describe treatment options for HNCRL

5. Describe how treatment for HNCRL can affect external and internal structures to positively impact patient treatment outcomes
