Course Description: This course will enable attendees to have a better understanding of the diagnosis of head and neck cancer including prevalence, pathology, and current treatment, including surgical intervention, radiation and chemotherapy. The course will focus on implications of head and neck cancer treatment including head and neck cancer related lymphedema. In addition, attendees will gain insight into cancer care pathways and survivorship issues as they relate to head and neck cancer related lymphedema. Included is an overview of lymphedema treatment and demonstration of an advanced pneumatic compression device used in the home to effectively manage head and neck cancer related lymphedema.
Course Objectives:
- Explain how head and neck cancer and its treatments afect the anatomy and physiology of soft tissue, lymphatics, and function for patients
- Describe early identifiction of patients with head and neck cancer-related lymphedema based on updated National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines
- Describe how to identify head and neck cancer-related internal and external lymphedema and the impact it has on the patient’s function
- Describe treatment options for head and neck cancer-related lymphedema
- Explain the efects of head and neck cancer-related treatment on the lymphatic system
Who should attend: The course content is relevant to SLPs, PTs, PTAs, OTs, OTAs, physicians, nurses and others involved in the care of patients with head and neck cancer-related lymphedema.
Accreditation: Tactile Medical will be providing one contact hour (.1 CE) for continuing education for Ohio RN and LPN, OT/OTA, PT/PTA, SLP. Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider # 17771, for 1 contact hour. This activity has been designed to meet the state continuing education requirements for RN and LPN, however the attendee is responsible for determining whether this activity meets the requirements for acceptable continuing education.
